RAM
Temporarily holds the data programs are using. It helps keep multiple applications open and provides fast access to information in use.
How does it work?
Programs keep instructions and data in RAM for fast access. If available memory runs out, the system may use storage as virtual memory, with longer access times.
Concepts you should know
Key concepts: capacity, speed and memory generation. Its contents are lost when power is switched off; it does not replace file storage.
An everyday example
When you work with several browser tabs and an image editor, each application uses some RAM. Closing applications frees memory for other tasks.
How it connects to the rest of the computer
The RAM generation must match what the motherboard and processor support. Modules from different generations are not interchangeable.
