Component guide
Cooling
Dissipates heat from the processor and other components. It may combine heatsinks, fans and liquid cooling systems.
How does it work?
A heatsink transfers heat from the component to a larger surface. Fans move air through its fins. In a liquid loop, heat travels to a radiator where it dissipates.
Concepts you should know
Key concepts: airflow, cooler compatibility and thermal contact. Thermal paste helps transfer heat between the processor and heatsink.
An everyday example
During demanding tasks, the computer may increase fan speed. If a component reaches its temperature limits, it may reduce performance to control heat.
How it connects to the rest of the computer
The cooler must fit the socket and available case space. Case fans refresh the air used by internal cooling systems.
