Component guide
Graphics processor (GPU)
Processes graphics and generates the image on the screen. It also accelerates supported tasks such as rendering, video editing and specialized calculations.
How does it work?
The GPU performs many operations in parallel. To build a scene, it processes geometry, textures, lighting and other effects. The result reaches the display as a sequence of images.
Concepts you should know
Key concepts: may be integrated into the processor or part of a dedicated card. Dedicated GPUs usually have their own video memory, called VRAM.
An everyday example
In a game, the CPU calculates some of the logic and prepares work for the GPU, which draws the scene. Performance depends on both and on each game's workload.
How it connects to the rest of the computer
A dedicated card connects to an expansion slot and may need additional power. An integrated GPU usually shares system RAM.
