Component guide
Processor (CPU)
Executes program instructions and coordinates many computer tasks. It is involved in opening applications, processing data and running game logic.
How does it work?
The CPU repeats a cycle of fetching, interpreting and executing instructions. Its cache keeps data close to the cores to reduce waiting. Application performance also depends on how much work it can distribute across multiple cores.
Concepts you should know
Key concepts: cores allow multiple tasks to run; clock speed and architecture also affect performance. More GHz does not always mean greater speed when comparing different processors.
An everyday example
When compressing a file, the processor performs the calculations needed to reorganize its data. Meanwhile, the operating system shares execution time among other applications.
How it connects to the rest of the computer
The CPU installs in the motherboard socket, uses RAM for its work and needs a compatible cooling system.
